You do not have to explain the situation. A line is enough: who it is for, roughly when, and whether you want residential or nursing care if you already know. Ruth answers these herself and usually the same day. If it is urgent, telephone instead.

- If somebody is dyingThere is no hour, no limit on numbers and no charge. Stay the night; we will put a bed in the room.
- A stomach bug in the houseWe will ask you to wash your hands and, if it is bad, to visit in the room rather than the lounge. We have never closed the house to families and would tell you on the telephone if we ever had to.
- MealtimesCome anyway. If you want to eat with her, tell the kitchen before eleven.
These are not really visiting hours. They are the hours at which the front door is on the latch; outside them you ring the bell and somebody who is already awake lets you in. Nobody will ask you why you have come at that hour.
