Elmswood House is an old rectory with twenty-eight bedrooms. We publish the fees, what they do not cover, how many staff are awake at night and what the inspectorate said in March, because without those four things you cannot tell us apart from anywhere else.

Four things, before you ring anyone
The fee is a weekly fee and it is not everything
Hairdressing, chiropody, newspapers, the dentist and taxis to hospital are charged separately. The list and the prices are on the visiting page.
We are not a hospital
There are things we cannot do, and a point at which someone would have to move to a hospital or a specialist unit. We say what that point is on the care page rather than when it arrives.
You do not need to telephone first
Come at four in the afternoon on a Tuesday, or at eight at night. You will see the house as it is, which is the only useful way to see it.
Most people who move here die here
That is what a place like this is, and we would rather write it down than let you find it out. What we do at the end is described on the care page.
How to decide, if nobody has told you
Visit three houses, without an appointment, between four and six in the afternoon, which is the hardest hour of the day in any of them. Ignore the carpets and the brochure. Watch whether the staff talk to the residents or to you, whether anyone is sitting alone in a corridor, and whether the place smells of anything. Then ask each one what the night staffing is and what the last inspection required them to put right. If they cannot answer both in a sentence, that is your answer. We have been here since 1987, we are owned by one family and not by a group, and we would rather you chose somewhere else than chose us badly.
